News Archive Partner Program

The News Archive Partner Program provides a way for Google and publishers and repositories to partner together and make historical newspaper archives discoverable online. As part of Google News, the News archive search function provides an easy way to search and explore historical archives.

For articles already in digital format, we've worked with the hosts of these archives to crawl and index their materials. When materials aren't easily available in digital format, we have partnered with the copyright holder to scan and present the newspaper in a way that is full-text searchable, fast and easy to navigate.

Frequently Asked Questions

What type of content is included in the News Archive Partner Program?

Our News Archive Partner Program provides a way to make unique and historically valuable newspaper archives available online. To reach this goal, we are partnering with newspaper publishers and aggregators covering a number of time periods, regions and perspectives. Many of the pages in these newspaper archives were unavailable online previously, and are now easily discoverable in Google News results.

How are materials included via the News Archive Partner Program different than other articles included in News archive search?

The only difference between articles we've digitized and those we've crawled on the web is the presentation of the article. We host newspaper content digitized via our News Archive Partner Program, while search results from online articles will direct you to the host of that content's own site. The ranking in search results of articles is the same, regardless of if they were crawled online or digitized and included via our News Archive Partner Program.

How many newspapers and issues are included in the News Archive Partner Program?

News archive search partners currently represent millions of articles, and we are working to continue to grow this collection. We are rapidly expanding and will be including unique newspaper content from all over the world.

How can I search all the issues from a particular newspaper?

You can easily limit search from the advanced archive search. Simply visit this page and include the newspaper in the Source field to look at results only from that paper in News archive search.

What can I do with the articles I find digitized via the News Archive Partner Program?

At this time, we don't offer the ability to download or print articles. However, we do offer the ability to share search results and interesting articles using the Link to article option found on the upper-right of your screen. By clicking this link and choosing a headline, you can easily mail this result to a friend and point them to check out the piece of history you discovered in News archive search.

What types of materials are you working with to bring newspaper content online?

We are working with a number of partners and a variety of types of archival materials, based on the needs of each partner. Generally, this involves scanning microfilm rolls, along with processing PDFs and image files provided by newspaper publishers from their archives.
